Cloak of Ash

Jordan Vauvert Dissonant Winds, Midnight Odyssey et... Hope Drone. Indispensable. Favorite track: Unending Grey.

Ippocalyptica

Ippocalyptica I have a soft spot for a lot of post-metal, but rarely does this translate into lasting admiration for an album. Hope Drone made the cut with Cloak of Ash. This is well-composed and well-executed black metal-infused post-metal, and if the genre tag sounds preposterous, open your mind and accept the beauty on offer. These blokes put many contemporaries to shame, both in terms of technical proficiency as well as songwriting maturity, and they are even better on their latest release.

1.
Unending grey, of time, distance and conscience And I have resigned myself For every breath and footfall is nothing Ash of the forsaken world Carried forth on bleak winds, into the void And in the end as dust we’re carried on the wind Scattered to nothing On hands and knees, beneath cloaks of ash Destined to crawl Decaying in the sorrow of a fleeting world Carried forth, into the void Fleeting world And in the end as dust we’re carried on the wind Scattered to nothing On hands and knees, beneath cloaks of ash Destined to crawl Decaying in the sorrow of a fleeting world Wake in darkness And a silence that burns my eyes And the fog rolling over the mountains Blocks out the sun forever Unending grey
2.
All rivers diverge from centre Torrents rage through clutching fingers Stealing into the nothing The frailty of all that breathes and bleeds Now revealed, in the lifeblood of a first son And I would silence all the world That your essence would sustain So deep the channels run, Carved into darkness and nothing And would that I could hold the world at bay But the infinite slips through wearied fingers (Stealing into the nothing) All rivers diverge from centre Torn away, into the quiet
3.
Watching the day in its final turning From half light to last light and into the gloaming Beyond twilight, there is no dawn Watching the day in its relentless turning From half light to last light and into the gloaming The last vestiges of warmth will leave When embers fade Now behold the world inherited Ash, dust, suffering Now behold the world inherited
4.
Etched in forever, the sum of all that was and all that will be; Humanity’s agonal breath It whispers through the trees A call to nothing Violence, in the chords that thrum beneath the earth A low note, it carries on the winds To every riven channel's depths And to every quiet corner, Where history resonates Malice, in the chords that thrum beneath the earth (Beneath the earth) And in the breaking light, we'll see the world for what it is Darkness unredeemable The looming crescendo of the merciless Dragging all to stillness The world turns, to the chords that thrum beneath the earth Beneath the earth We walk to the glow of forest fires Wading in paths of black ink, All things of beauty are forgotten; every night is come The world: at its end and unending
5.
Mourn the last light, its fleeting passage Mourn the breaking day For every breath is written And every end is fated in its beginnings Dwell in the ruins Dormant in the empty silence Beneath crepuscular rays, cold stone at your back Warmth has forsaken this place Dwell in the ruins Dormant in the empty silence When all that you are is that which you’d discard When every end is fated in its beginnings As your hands turn to ash, breathe on them (Scattered to the nothing)

To traverse the ravaged land Hand in bloodied hand But you are a grain, and I am a grain, and the tide will carry us apart if it wills it To rest in its vermiculate scars And walk the forsaken soil Impermanence is to be as one against the world

about

Australian atmospheric black/sludge metal quartet Hope Drone emerge with their Relapse debut LP Cloak of Ash. A richly captivating, seven song stroke of extreme brilliance, Cloak of Ash combines devastatingly beautiful atmosphere with the uncompromising heaviness of a thousand tidal waves. This is music that is dynamic and textured, supremely nihilistic and earth shaking. Hope Drone have arrived with incredible force and are here to crash violently upon your shores.
